Ivano-Frankivsk and Berlin

How many participants?

10 from Germany, 10 from Ivano-Frankivsk

What is the workshop about?

Promprylad is a factory in the center of Ivano-Frankivsk, where the gasmeters are still produced, which until recently were still exported to Russia. As a result of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict this export stopped, production became unprofitable due to the weak economic model. Part of the premises is rented to representatives of the creative industries. Nevertheless, there is always a threat that the development direction of this territory will change: old buildings will be demolished and new highrise housing will appear instead.

How to combine the experience of the factory's past with the ideas of the future development and determine how to act now and today?

The purpose of the workshop

To define and explain the significance of Promrylad for the urban culture and the potential for its development. In the framework of the workshop there will be held a practical artistic research based on the hypothesis that the more local history is, the more logical it will fit into the global context (as opposed to the idea of creating a globalized space without unique characteristics on the basis of the plant – the hypothesis can be refuted or a hybrid solution will be found) . Due to the formation of local identity, we will determine the significance of the plant for both the city and for society as a whole.

Action plan:

August 12-20 – implementation of the cultural intervention in Ivano-Frankivsk during the Urban Festival "City Scanning Session"

October 11-18 – study visit to Berlin:

•    Research

•    Field visits

•    Theoretical and methodological support by German and Ukrainian curators

At the end of the workshop, there will be a presentation-performance based on the results of the visit to Germany and teamwork in Ivano-Frankivsk on the Promprylad territory.
